Have questions about couples therapy?
Q&A-
Couples therapy can benefit partners at any stage of their relationship; not only those in crisis. It can be helpful for couples who want to improve communication, rebuild trust, navigate conflict, strengthen emotional connection, or work through major life transitions.
Couples therapy may also support partners experiencing concerns related to infidelity, intimacy, parenting, stress, grief, cultural or family differences, ADHD or neurodivergence, premarital concerns, or feeling disconnected from one another.
Whether you are working through a specific challenge or simply want to build a healthier and more fulfilling relationship, couples therapy can provide a supportive space to better understand one another and create meaningful change.
-
The length of couples therapy varies depending on your relationship needs, goals, and the concerns you are working through. Most couples meet bi-weekly for 90-minute sessions, giving partners enough time to explore concerns, practice new skills, and work toward meaningful change without feeling rushed.
Some couples may benefit from a few months of therapy, while others may choose to continue longer when working through more complex or longstanding relationship patterns. Your therapist will regularly assess your progress with you and adjust the frequency or length of treatment as needed.
-
Most couples attend therapy bi-weekly for 60-minute sessions. This schedule allows enough time between sessions to practice new skills and apply what you are learning in your relationship.
Depending on your needs, goals, and level of concern, your therapist may recommend meeting more or less frequently.
-
Your couples therapist may meet with each partner individually when it supports the couples therapy process. However, ongoing individual therapy is typically kept separate from couples therapy to help maintain clear boundaries, neutrality, and trust within the relationship.
If individual therapy would be beneficial, your couples therapist may recommend working with a separate provider while continuing couples therapy together.
-
Couples therapy with this provider may not be the best fit when there are active concerns related to abuse, coercive control, or immediate safety; when conflict is so intense that sessions cannot remain emotionally or physically safe; or when one or both partners may need individual stabilization or a higher level of care before beginning couples work.
This provider may also not be the appropriate fit for couples who are already actively pursuing divorce and are seeking therapy primarily to document or demonstrate that they “tried counseling,” rather than to meaningfully work on the relationship. Couples therapy is most effective when both partners are willing to participate honestly, engage in the process, and work toward clearly identified goals.
Services are also not provided for court, custody, legal documentation, or other forensic purposes. If couples therapy is not clinically appropriate, your therapist will discuss recommendations and may refer you to a provider or service that better meets your needs.
-
Insurance coverage for couples therapy varies by plan. Many insurance plans do not cover couples therapy when the primary focus is relationship concerns, as this may not be considered a medically necessary service.
In some cases, insurance may provide coverage when one partner has a qualifying mental health diagnosis and couples sessions are considered part of that individual’s treatment. We encourage you to contact your insurance provider directly to confirm your specific benefits before beginning services.
-
Premarital counseling is available for couples who want to strengthen their relationship before marriage. Sessions may focus on communication, conflict resolution, expectations, finances, family dynamics, intimacy, shared values, and preparing for future transitions together.
Your therapist may also incorporate structured premarital tools such as SYMBIS or Prepare/Enrich to help identify relationship strengths and areas that may benefit from additional attention before marriage.
